Ore Blending Strategy

An ore blending strategy is the overarching plan and set of guiding principles developed by mine planning and processing teams to determine how, when, and in what proportions different ore sources should be combined over the short, medium, and long term to meet production, quality, and economic objectives. Unlike the day-to-day operational act of ore blending itself, a blending strategy involves higher-level decision-making informed by orebody knowledge, grade distribution models, customer contract requirements, and plant processing constraints. In iron ore mining, a blending strategy might prioritize sequencing extraction from multiple pits to consistently deliver product within contracted iron, silica, and alumina specifications while managing stripping ratios and equipment allocation. In bauxite mining, the strategy could focus on balancing high-silica and low-silica zones to optimize refinery feed quality over the life of mine. Gold mining blending strategies often aim to smooth metallurgical performance by managing the ratio of oxide, transitional, and sulphide ore types fed to the plant, while diamond operations may develop strategies to manage variable diamond grade and quality across different kimberlite or alluvial zones. A well-designed ore blending strategy is typically integrated into the mine's long-term plan and reviewed regularly as new geological and grade control data becomes available, helping to maximize resource utilization and revenue while minimizing processing disruptions.
