Net Zero

Net zero refers to achieving a balance between the greenhouse gases emitted and those removed from the atmosphere, resulting in no net increase in emissions. In mining—particularly bauxite, iron ore, and gold operations—net zero is becoming a strategic environmental target due to increasing global pressure to reduce climate change impacts. Achieving net zero involves reducing direct emissions from diesel-powered equipment, blasting, hauling, and processing, while offsetting remaining emissions through carbon capture, reforestation, renewable energy use, or carbon credits.

Mining companies pursue net zero through electrification of fleets, use of renewable energy sources (solar, wind), energy efficiency improvements, and adoption of low-carbon technologies. For example, iron ore mines may transition to electric haul trucks, while bauxite operations may integrate solar power into refining processes. However, achieving full net zero is complex due to the energy-intensive nature of mining and processing activities. It requires long-term planning, investment in innovation, and collaboration across supply chains. Regulatory frameworks and investor expectations are increasingly pushing mining companies toward verified net zero commitments, making it a key driver of sustainable mining transformation.
