Mining Contractor

A mining contractor is a third-party company engaged under a commercial contract to perform specific mining services on behalf of a mine owner or operator, as an alternative to the owner conducting mining activities with its own workforce and equipment, an arrangement known as owner-operated mining. Contracted services commonly include drilling and blasting, loading and hauling of ore and waste, overburden removal, mine development, and at times full mine operation and management. Contract structures vary and include cost-plus arrangements, fixed-price contracts, and schedule-of-rates agreements based on units of material moved or distance hauled. The use of mining contractors offers several advantages, including reduced upfront capital expenditure on equipment fleets, access to specialized technical expertise and equipment not otherwise available to the owner, flexibility to scale operations up or down in response to market conditions, and transfer of certain operational risks to the contractor. Contract mining is particularly prevalent in bulk commodity operations such as iron ore and bauxite, where large earthmoving fleets are required, but is also widely used in gold and diamond mining for specific services such as exploration drilling, shaft sinking, or specialized bulk sampling programs.
