Infrastructure Asset

An infrastructure asset in mining refers to any physical structure, facility, or system that is essential for the establishment, operation, or decommissioning of a mine and its associated processing and logistics functions. Infrastructure assets in bauxite, gold, iron ore, and diamond mining include a wide range of tangible capital items such as haul roads, access roads, and highway connections; railway lines, rolling stock, and rail infrastructure for bulk ore transport; port facilities including ship loaders, stockpile yards, and berths; water supply dams, pipelines, pump stations, and treatment plants; power generation plants, substations, and transmission lines; processing plants and associated buildings; tailings storage facilities (TSFs); communications networks; camps and accommodation villages; and airstrips or heliports.  Infrastructure assets are typically classified as either owner-operated or shared-use, with some assets such as railways and ports being developed as shared infrastructure corridors to reduce the capital burden on individual producers. In accounting and financial reporting, infrastructure assets are capitalized on the balance sheet and depreciated over their useful economic life in accordance with applicable accounting standards. The condition, valuation, and remaining service life of infrastructure assets are key considerations in mine planning, financial reporting, and asset management programs. In remote regions such as the Pilbara iron ore district of Australia, the Simandou iron ore deposit in Guinea, or kimberlite diamond mines in northern Canada, the development of major infrastructure assets represents the single largest component of project capital expenditure and is frequently the critical path item in project development timelines. Proper maintenance, inspection, and replacement planning of infrastructure assets is essential for operational continuity and worker safety.
