Biodiversity Offset

A conservation measure designed to compensate for residual biodiversity impacts from mining that cannot be avoided or sufficiently mitigated, by securing equivalent or greater conservation gains at a different location. Offsets may involve protecting existing high-value habitat, restoring degraded land, or funding conservation programs. The no-net-loss principle guides offset design to ensure mining's biodiversity impact is genuinely compensated. In environmentally sensitive bauxite and gold mining regions, biodiversity offsets are increasingly required as conditions of mining approvals.
