Guinea’s bauxite sector started 2026 with strong export activity, shipping 20.26 million tonnes of bauxite in January alongside 46,764 tonnes of alumina, according to the latest data released by the Guinea Ministry of Mines and Geology. The figures highlight the continued momentum of Guinea’s mining sector and reinforce the country’s position as the world’s leading supplier of seaborne bauxite to global alumina refineries.
Leading the export rankings was Société Minière de Boké (SMB), which shipped 6.57 million tonnes of bauxite during the month across 32 vessels, accounting for roughly one-third of Guinea’s total shipments. The company continues to dominate export volumes thanks to its large-scale operations in the Boké region and its integrated logistics infrastructure linking mines, railways, and dedicated port terminals.
Chinese operator Aluminum Corporation of China (Chalco) ranked second with 2.64 million tonnes exported on 14 vessels, reflecting sustained throughput from its mining operations and port facilities. Meanwhile, Compagnie des Bauxites de Guinée, historically one of the country’s flagship bauxite producers, shipped 1.64 million tonnes on 28 vessels, maintaining a solid presence in the seaborne market.
Mid-tier exporters also contributed significantly to January’s volumes. Zhicheng Guinee Mining, operating in partnership with GBT logistics infrastructure, exported 0.94 million tonnes across five vessels, matching the 0.94 million tonnes shipped by China Dianjian Mining during the same period.
Other notable contributors included Compagnie des Bauxites de Dabola-Tougué with 0.82 million tonnes, Alliance Mining Commodities with 0.79 million tonnes, Bauxite Alliance Mining at 0.63 million tonnes, and Kimbo Bauxite Mining with 0.58 million tonnes exported.
On the downstream side, alumina exports remained limited, with the Friguia refinery operated by United Company RUSAL reporting 46,764 tonnes shipped aboard two vessels. The refinery was the sole alumina exporter recorded for the month, underscoring the continued dominance of raw bauxite exports over local processing.
Industry analysts note that Guinea’s strong January performance reflects robust demand from Asian alumina refineries, particularly in China, where Guinea remains the primary supplier of high-grade bauxite. The steady flow of shipments also highlights the increasing efficiency of the country’s mining logistics corridors, including rail and port infrastructure developed over the past decade.
With several new projects advancing and ongoing investments in transport infrastructure—particularly in the Boké mining corridor—Guinea’s export capacity is expected to continue expanding in 2026. For mining operators and investors, January’s figures confirm both the scale and resilience of Guinea’s bauxite industry, even as the country seeks to accelerate local value addition through refining and alumina production.
