Wet screening in mining is the process of separating particles of ore, mineral aggregates, or other granular materials into distinct size fractions using perforated or woven screening media while simultaneously applying water sprays to the material on the screen surface. In bauxite, gold, iron ore, and diamond mining, wet screening is a widely used and operationally important size-classification technique that offers significant advantages over dry screening when processing ores containing moisture, clay minerals, fine slimes, or sticky surface coatings. The water applied during wet screening serves to wash fine particles through the screen apertures, preventing blinding of the screen mesh by sticky clay or fine mineral particles that would adhere to the screen surface and progressively block openings, reducing throughput and classification accuracy. Wet screening also improves the sharpness of size separations by ensuring that near-mesh particles that would otherwise be retained on the screen due to surface tension or electrostatic forces are carried through with the water flow. In iron ore mining, wet screening is fundamental to lump and fines product generation, as specified export product sizing must be achieved with high accuracy to meet contractual quality requirements and command premium pricing. In bauxite mining, wet screening in the primary sizing circuit removes the reactive silica-rich fine fraction before ore is transported to the refinery, improving Bayer process efficiency. In alluvial diamond mining and gold placer operations, wet screening is the first step in concentrating coarse heavy minerals from host gravels. Wet screening plants require robust slimes management and water recycling infrastructure to handle the large volumes of clay-laden washwater generated.
