Wet Ore Screening

Wet ore screening in mining is a size-classification process in which water sprays are applied to ore as it passes over vibrating or static screens, with the dual purpose of separating ore particles by size and simultaneously washing away fine clay, silt, and dust particles adhering to ore surfaces. In bauxite, gold, iron ore, and diamond mining, wet ore screening is a fundamental unit operation in the primary ore preparation circuit, typically employed shortly after crushing and ahead of further beneficiation or processing stages. The application of water during screening serves several important functions: it breaks down soft clay aggregates that would otherwise blind the screen apertures and reduce classification efficiency; it washes liberated fines through the screen deck rather than allowing them to contaminate the coarser product fraction; and it improves the overall cleanliness and metallurgical performance of the sized ore streams. Wet screening equipment used in mining includes linear motion vibrating screens, circular motion banana screens, flip-flow screens for sticky or difficult-to-screen materials, and trommel drums for primary washing of clay-rich ore. In iron ore operations, wet screening is critical for producing lump and fines products to meet export size specifications, with screen apertures typically set at 6.3 mm to separate lump (+6.3 mm) from fines (-6.3 mm) fractions. In bauxite mining, wet screening removes fine reactive silica-bearing clay minerals that would penalize Bayer process performance. In alluvial diamond mining, wet screening is the first step in liberating diamonds from host gravels and removing oversize boulders before density separation. The management of screen undersize water and slimes requires careful design of drainage and collection systems.
