Water Truck

A water truck in mining is a heavy-duty vehicle equipped with a large water tank and a spray or sprinkler system, used to apply water to unpaved roads, stockpiles, active mining areas, and other disturbed surfaces for the purposes of dust suppression, compaction support, and fire prevention. In bauxite, gold, iron ore, and diamond mining operations, water trucks are among the most frequently deployed pieces of support equipment and play a critical role in maintaining safe working conditions and minimizing environmental impacts of airborne dust particles. Dust generated from haul roads, blast sites, crushing operations, and ore stockpiles can create significant health hazards for mine workers — including silicosis, pneumoconiosis, and other respiratory diseases — and can impact nearby communities and sensitive ecosystems. Water truck fleets in large open-cut mines may consist of dozens of vehicles ranging in capacity from 10,000 to over 100,000 liters, depending on the scale and dust generation intensity of the operation. Modern water trucks used in mining are often equipped with GPS tracking and autonomous dispatch systems, soil moisture sensors, and variable spray heads to optimize water application rates and prevent overuse or waste. The performance of water truck fleets is measured using metrics such as liters applied per kilometer of road treated and dust suppression effectiveness assessments. In water-scarce environments, the optimization of water truck operations is essential to minimize the overall water footprint of the mine. Some operations use dust suppressant chemicals mixed with the truck water to improve effectiveness and reduce overall application volumes.
