A washability test is a laboratory procedure conducted to evaluate the amenability of a mined ore or mineral sample to physical separation processes involving water or other liquid media. In coal and iron ore mining, washability tests determine the proportion of valuable mineral that can be recovered at various specific gravities, providing data used to design and optimize washing or beneficiation circuits. In bauxite mining, washability tests assess how effectively clay, silica, and other gangue minerals can be separated from the aluminium-bearing ore through water-based washing processes. For gold mining, these tests help identify the distribution of free gold particles within alluvial or weathered ore deposits and their response to gravity separation. In diamond mining, washability tests are used to evaluate the efficiency of separating diamonds from host rock and heavy mineral concentrates using dense media separation or jig plants. The results are plotted on washability curves that guide plant design, equipment selection, and process parameter optimization, ultimately informing decisions about the economic viability of processing a given ore body.
