A quarry bench is a horizontal ledge or step-like formation created within an open-pit or quarry excavation, representing a specific level of excavation from which drilling, blasting, loading, and hauling operations are conducted. In bauxite, gold, iron ore, and diamond mining operations that use open-pit methods, the quarry bench is the fundamental geometric unit of the mine design. Each bench has a specific height, width, and face angle determined by the rock strength, ore geometry, slope stability requirements, and equipment specifications. Bench height in large iron ore mines may range from 10 to 15 meters, while in bauxite mining, where the ore is typically shallow and soft, benches are often much lower — sometimes only 2 to 5 meters. The bench floor is the horizontal surface on which drilling rigs, excavators, and haul trucks operate, while the bench face is the exposed vertical or sub-vertical wall created by blasting. The catch berm between successive benches plays a critical role in slope stability by capturing falling material and providing a buffer zone for safety. In diamond mining, particularly in kimberlite pipe operations, bench design must account for the steep-sided, carrot-shaped geometry of the ore body. Proper bench design and management are essential for maintaining safe working conditions, achieving efficient ore extraction, and ensuring the long-term geotechnical stability of the overall pit slope.
