An In-Pit Crushing System (IPCS), also referred to as an In-Pit Crushing and Conveying (IPCC) System, is a fully integrated material handling solution that combines in-pit crushing equipment with a conveyor network to move crushed ore or waste from within the pit to surface destinations. The system typically comprises a primary crusher (jaw, gyratory, or impact type), a series of overland and in-pit belt conveyors, transfer stations, tripper cars, stackers, and associated electrical and control infrastructure. In bauxite mining, IPCS implementations have been particularly effective in large, flat deposits in Australia, Guinea, and Brazil, where long truck hauls were cost-prohibitive. In gold mining, IPCS handles the crushing and conveying of heap leach ore. In iron ore operations, fully mobile IPCC systems from manufacturers such as thyssenkrupp and FLSmidth handle millions of tonnes annually, dramatically reducing operational expenditure. In diamond mining, IPCS requires specially engineered crusher settings to protect stones. The system is monitored via advanced process control (APC) and SCADA systems, ensuring consistent feed rates, crusher performance, and conveyor reliability while providing real-time data for mine planning decisions.
