Particle Classification

Particle classification is the process of separating a mixture of mined material into different size fractions or density groups to prepare it for further processing or to meet product specifications. In bauxite operations, classification separates coarse gibbsitic or boehmitic fractions from fines prior to the Bayer process, ensuring consistent digestion behavior. In gold processing, classification, typically achieved using hydrocyclones or spiral classifiers, controls the feed size to cyanide leaching circuits or gravity concentration tables, ensuring adequate liberation of gold particles from gangue material. In iron ore beneficiation, classification separates lump ore from fines and ultra-fines, which are directed to different downstream processes such as direct shipping, sintering, or pelletizing. In diamond recovery, classification by size is critical because diamonds are recovered using different technologies depending on particle size, ranging from dense media separation for coarser material to X-ray transmission sorting for finer fractions. Classification equipment includes screens, cyclones, classifiers, and rake classifiers, each suited to particular size ranges and slurry densities. Effective particle classification improves downstream recovery efficiency, reduces reagent consumption, minimizes equipment wear, and ensures that each size fraction receives the most appropriate and cost-effective treatment method, directly impacting overall plant metallurgical performance and profitability.
