Ore Horizon

An ore horizon is a distinct stratigraphic layer or level within a sequence of rock or sediment that contains economically significant mineralization, typically forming through depositional, weathering, or mineralizing processes confined to a particular geological time period or environment. The concept is especially relevant to bedded or layered deposits where ore-bearing material is sandwiched between barren or lower-grade units above and below. Iron ore horizons are classically associated with banded iron formations, where iron-rich layers alternate with chert or shale bands deposited in ancient marine environments, later enriched by supergene weathering processes that leach silica and concentrate iron oxides. Bauxite ore horizons form as discrete weathering profiles, often a few meters to tens of meters thick, developed at specific elevations within a lateritic weathering sequence, overlying unweathered parent rock and underlying ferruginous or pisolitic caprock. Placer gold deposits frequently contain ore horizons associated with ancient buried river channels, known as paleochannels, where gold concentrated mechanically during past fluvial activity. Diamond placer deposits similarly contain ore horizons within specific gravel layers in river terraces or marine beach deposits where diamonds have been naturally sorted and concentrated by water energy.
