Ore Characterization Test

An ore characterization test refers to a specific, individual laboratory or pilot-scale procedure conducted as part of a broader ore characterization program to measure a particular physical, chemical, or metallurgical property of an ore sample, with results feeding into the overall characterization assessment and subsequent process design decisions. Common ore characterization tests include comminution tests such as the Bond ball mill work index, which measures grinding hardness and energy requirements, and abrasion or impact tests that assess equipment wear potential. Chemical assay tests determine elemental or compound composition, while mineralogical tests such as quantitative X-ray diffraction or scanning electron microscopy identify mineral phases and their liberation characteristics. In bauxite testing, specific tests measure reactive silica content and alumina availability under simulated Bayer process conditions. Iron ore testing often includes tumble and abrasion index tests relevant to handling and transport, as well as reducibility tests for downstream ironmaking. Gold ore characterization tests frequently include cyanide leach bottle tests to determine gold recovery and reagent consumption, and diagnostic leach tests to identify refractory behavior. Diamond ore tests may involve bulk sampling and dense media separation trials to estimate grade and stone size distribution.
