Occupational Disease

Occupational disease refers to any illness or chronic health condition that arises as a direct result of exposure to hazards encountered in the course of mining employment, as distinct from acute injuries caused by accidents. In the bauxite, gold, iron ore, and diamond sectors, common occupational diseases include silicosis and other pneumoconioses caused by prolonged inhalation of crystalline silica dust during drilling, blasting, crushing, or ore handling; noise-induced hearing loss from sustained exposure to heavy machinery, crushers, and blasting operations; musculoskeletal disorders from repetitive manual tasks or vibration exposure; and, in gold processing specifically, conditions linked to mercury or cyanide exposure where controls are inadequate. Diamond and iron ore operations can also present risks of respiratory disease from dust generated during crushing and screening of hard rock ores. Occupational diseases typically develop gradually over months or years of cumulative exposure, which makes early detection through routine medical surveillance, biological monitoring, and lung function testing essential. Mining companies are generally required to maintain exposure registers, provide appropriate personal protective equipment, and implement engineering controls such as dust suppression and ventilation to minimize the risk of occupational disease, alongside compensation schemes for affected workers.
