Mobile Equipment

Mobile equipment is a broad category encompassing all machinery and vehicles used in mining that are designed to move under their own power across the mine site, as distinct from fixed plant and infrastructure. This includes excavators and hydraulic shovels used for loading, haul trucks for transporting ore and waste, drill rigs for blast hole and exploration drilling, bulldozers and graders for site preparation and road maintenance, wheel loaders, water trucks for dust suppression, light vehicles for personnel transport, and specialized underground equipment such as load-haul-dump units and jumbo drills. Mobile equipment represents one of the largest capital and operating cost categories for any mine, with fleet selection driven by factors including production rate requirements, haul distances, bench heights, and ground conditions. Effective mobile equipment management relies on fleet management systems that track machine location, utilization, fuel consumption, and maintenance needs in real time to maximize productivity and minimize downtime. In bauxite and iron ore operations, mobile equipment fleets tend to be dominated by very large-capacity trucks and shovels suited to high-volume bulk extraction, whereas gold and diamond operations often deploy a more varied mix of equipment sizes to support selective, grade-conscious mining.
