A mixing tank, also referred to as an agitation or conditioning tank, is a processing vessel used within a mineral processing plant to thoroughly blend ore slurry with water, reagents, or chemicals to achieve a homogeneous mixture suitable for the next stage of treatment. Mixing tanks are typically fitted with mechanical agitators or impellers, and sometimes air or pulp lifters, to keep solids in suspension and ensure even reagent distribution, preventing settling or stratification that could reduce processing efficiency. In gold processing, mixing tanks are central to the cyanide leaching circuit, where ground ore is conditioned with cyanide solution and lime to dissolve gold and silver prior to recovery by carbon adsorption or zinc precipitation. In bauxite refining under the Bayer process, mixing or digestion tanks combine bauxite ore with hot caustic soda solution to dissolve aluminum-bearing minerals. Iron ore beneficiation circuits use mixing tanks to condition slurry with flocculants or flotation reagents ahead of magnetic separation or flotation cells. Mixing tank design parameters, including retention time, agitator speed, and tank geometry, are carefully engineered to achieve the required degree of mixing while minimizing energy consumption and wear on equipment.
