A mining block is a defined three-dimensional volume of ground or ore body that serves as the fundamental unit of measurement and control within a resource or mine planning model. Mining blocks are typically generated within block modelling software and are assigned attributes such as grade, density, rock type, geological domain, and resource classification, allowing geologists and mine planners to interrogate the deposit at a manageable scale. Block size is selected based on the geometry of the deposit, the spacing of available drilling data, and the selectivity of the intended mining method; narrow, high-grade gold veins may require small block sizes to capture grade variability accurately, while large, relatively homogeneous iron ore or bauxite deposits can be modelled with coarser blocks. In open pit operations, mining blocks are aggregated into benches and pit phases for scheduling purposes, while in underground operations they may correspond to individual stopes or panels. The mining block model underpins virtually all downstream technical work, including reserve estimation, pit optimization, production scheduling, and grade control reconciliation between the predicted and actual mined material.
