Mine Recovery

Mine recovery is a multifaceted term used in mining to describe two related but distinct concepts: metallurgical recovery — the percentage of a target metal or mineral that is successfully extracted from ore during processing — and operational recovery from unexpected disruptions such as equipment failures, geotechnical incidents, flooding, industrial disputes, or natural disasters. Both forms of recovery are fundamental metrics of performance and resilience in bauxite, gold, iron ore, and diamond mining operations.

In the metallurgical sense, mine recovery measures the efficiency with which valuable minerals are separated from the gangue (waste) material during ore processing. Gold recovery from a carbon-in-leach (CIL) circuit, for example, represents the proportion of the gold present in the mill feed that is ultimately captured in the final gold doré product, with typical recoveries ranging from 85 to 96 percent depending on ore mineralogy, liberation characteristics, and process optimization. Iron ore recovery reflects the proportion of iron units reporting to the final product from the ROM ore after beneficiation through screening, wet or dry magnetic separation, or dense media separation. For diamonds, recovery is particularly critical given the extreme value of individual stones — even a single unrecovered large gem can represent a significant financial loss — and specialized recovery circuits incorporating X-ray transmission (XRT) sorters, dense media separation, and careful screening are designed to maximize recovery across all stone sizes.

In the operational resilience sense, mine recovery describes the capability of a mining operation to resume production efficiently following an unplanned event. This encompasses emergency response, incident investigation, equipment repair or replacement, regulatory notification and clearance, workforce support, and resumption of mining and processing activities. Mines with strong recovery capabilities maintain pre-built contingency plans, critical spares inventories, and well-practiced emergency response teams that can rapidly stabilize a situation and restore production.
