Mine infrastructure encompasses the complete built environment of physical assets, utilities, facilities, and services that support mining and processing operations but are not part of the ore extraction or processing train itself. In bauxite, gold, iron ore, and diamond mining, mine infrastructure is the enabling foundation upon which the entire operation depends, providing the power, water, communications, accommodation, transport, and administrative support that make sustained mineral production possible.
Power infrastructure is among the most critical components of mine infrastructure. Remote mine sites — such as bauxite mines in the jungles of Guinea or diamond mines in the Kalahari — must generate their own power through diesel generating sets, gas turbines, or, increasingly, hybrid renewable energy systems combining solar photovoltaic arrays, wind turbines, and battery storage to reduce fuel costs and carbon emissions. Grid-connected mines in more accessible locations may rely on national or regional electricity grids, supplemented by onsite generation for reliability.
Water infrastructure includes raw water supply systems (boreholes, river offtakes, or rainwater harvesting), treatment plants for potable water, process water distribution pipelines, tailings return water systems, and wastewater treatment facilities. For iron ore mines in arid Western Australia, desalination plants or long-distance water pipelines may be necessary.
Access and transport infrastructure includes haul roads connecting mining areas internally, access roads linking the mine to regional road networks, airstrips for personnel rotation in remote locations, and — for large iron ore and bauxite mines — private railway lines and dedicated port facilities for product export. Accommodation villages or fly-in fly-out (FIFO) camps provide housing, catering, recreation, and medical facilities for the mine workforce. Administrative infrastructure encompasses offices, control rooms, training facilities, workshops, fuel storage, explosives magazines, and warehouses for spare parts and consumables.
