Metallurgical testing is the systematic laboratory, pilot-scale, and semi-commercial evaluation of ore samples to determine the most effective and economical methods for processing a given mineral deposit, and to quantify the expected performance of those methods at full production scale. It forms an essential component of all phases of mine development — from early scoping studies through to bankable feasibility studies and operational optimization. In bauxite projects, metallurgical testing includes Bayer process digestion trials to measure available alumina, reactive silica levels, organic content, and caustic consumption, as well as settling and filtration tests to characterize red mud behaviour. Gold metallurgical testing programs typically include grindability tests (Bond Ball Mill Work Index), gravity concentration assessments, bottle roll cyanide leach tests, CIL/CIP kinetic tests, refractory ore characterization (pressure oxidation, bio-oxidation, roasting trials), and environmental testwork on tailings. Iron ore testwork encompasses liberation analysis, Davis tube recovery tests, magnetic separation and flotation trials, pelletizing characterization, and blast furnace sinter tests. Diamond metallurgical testing involves bulk sampling, DMS trials, X-ray recovery testwork, and diamond breakage assessments. The quality and representativeness of samples used in metallurgical testing programs are critical, as results directly underpin project valuations, process plant designs, and financial models.
