A Lost Time Injury (LTI) is a workplace injury or occupational illness that results in an employee being unable to perform their regular work duties for one or more scheduled work shifts following the incident. In the mining industry, including bauxite, gold, iron ore, and diamond operations, LTIs are a key safety performance indicator used to measure the effectiveness of health and safety management systems. Examples of LTIs include fractures, serious sprains, burns, crush injuries, and other incidents that require recovery time away from work.
Mining environments involve numerous hazards such as heavy mobile equipment, blasting operations, highwall instability, electrical systems, and material handling activities. Consequently, reducing LTIs is a primary objective for mine operators. Companies monitor metrics such as the Lost Time Injury Frequency Rate (LTIFR), which measures the number of LTIs per million hours worked.
Investigations are typically conducted following every LTI to identify root causes and implement corrective actions. These investigations may reveal issues such as inadequate training, poor hazard identification, equipment failure, or non-compliance with safety procedures. Preventive measures include risk assessments, safety training, personal protective equipment (PPE), behavioral safety programs, and continuous monitoring of workplace conditions.
A low LTI rate reflects a strong safety culture and operational discipline, while a high rate may indicate weaknesses in safety management. Investors, regulators, and stakeholders often review LTI statistics when evaluating mining companies’ operational performance and commitment to worker welfare.
