Industrial Minerals

Industrial Minerals are naturally occurring, non-metallic, and non-fuel mineral commodities that are extracted and processed for use in a vast range of industrial, commercial, agricultural, and consumer applications, based primarily on their physical and chemical properties rather than their metal content. While bauxite, gold, iron ore, and diamond mining are commonly associated with metallic and gemstone extraction, the term industrial minerals encompasses a separate and economically significant category that includes minerals such as limestone, dolomite, silica sand, kaolin (china clay), feldspar, talc, bentonite, barite, gypsum, potash, phosphate, fluorite, diatomite, vermiculite, graphite, lithium minerals, and many others. In the context of mining operations that produce metallic minerals, industrial minerals frequently intersect with the primary operation: limestone is used as a flux in iron ore sintering and blast furnace operations; barite is critical as a drilling mud weighting agent in oil and gas exploration adjacent to mining regions; silica sand is used in the casting of iron ore; and bentonite is used as a binding agent in iron ore pelletisation. Industrial mineral deposits are assessed and reported using the same geological resource classification frameworks as metallic ores (JORC, SAMREC, NI 43-101), and their extraction employs similar open-pit and underground mining methods, processing equipment, and environmental management practices.
