Inclinometer

An Inclinometer, also known as a slope indicator or tiltmeter, is a precision geotechnical instrument used extensively in open-pit and underground mining operations to measure the angular displacement, tilt, deformation, or movement of rock masses, pit walls, embankments, tailings storage facilities, waste dumps, and in-pit waste repositories over time. The device operates by detecting changes in the inclination of a borehole or surface installation relative to vertical or horizontal reference planes, providing critical data for slope stability monitoring and early warning systems. In bauxite mining, inclinometers monitor the stability of rehabilitated areas and access ramps. In gold mining, they are deployed in pit walls — particularly in geologically complex or highly fractured rock masses — and in tailings dam embankments where slope failure could have catastrophic environmental and human consequences. In iron ore operations, inclinometer arrays in pit walls of large, deep open pits provide real-time data that informs slope management decisions and restricts access to hazardous areas. In diamond mining, kimberlite pipe walls with variable rock quality are routinely monitored with inclinometer strings. Data from inclinometers is integrated with radar monitoring systems, total stations, and GPS prisms to provide comprehensive geotechnical risk management.
