Hydrology is the scientific study of water in all its forms on, above, and below the Earth’s surface. It encompasses the water cycle, including precipitation, evaporation, infiltration, runoff, and groundwater movement. In mining, hydrology is fundamental for understanding how water interacts with mining environments, influencing mine design, safety, and environmental management. For example, in iron ore or bauxite mining, hydrological conditions determine how much water accumulates in open pits during rainy seasons and how drainage systems should be designed. In gold and diamond mining, hydrology is also critical for placer mining operations where water is used for ore separation. Hydrological studies help engineers predict flood risks, manage tailings dams, and ensure compliance with environmental regulations. The discipline combines field measurements, meteorological data, and mathematical modeling to simulate water behavior. Effective hydrological management ensures sustainable mining practices, protects ecosystems, and reduces operational risks associated with excessive water inflow or contamination.
