Highwall

A Highwall is the exposed vertical or steeply inclined face of rock and soil that remains after excavation activities in an open-pit mine, quarry, or surface mining operation. Highwalls are common features in bauxite, iron ore, gold, and diamond mines where large volumes of material are removed to access mineral deposits.

The height, angle, and stability of a highwall depend on geological conditions, rock strength, groundwater presence, weathering characteristics, and mining design parameters. Engineers carefully design highwalls to ensure safe and efficient extraction while minimizing the risk of slope failures.

Highwalls are often divided into benches separated by horizontal working platforms that improve stability and provide access for mining equipment.
