Grader

A Grader, also known as a motor grader or road grader, is a heavy construction and mining machine equipped with a long adjustable blade positioned between the front and rear axles, used primarily to create and maintain flat or precisely sloped surfaces such as haul roads, ramps, berms, and work platforms within open-pit mines and on access roads between mining areas. In bauxite, gold, iron ore, and diamond mining operations, graders are indispensable for maintaining safe and efficient haul road conditions, which directly affects the speed and fuel consumption of haul trucks and the wear rates of tyres and suspension components.

The blade of a grader can be angled, tilted, and lifted to cut, spread, and level material with a high degree of precision. Graders are also used for shaping drainage channels, removing loose material from road surfaces after rainfall, blending soils for dust suppression, and preparing surfaces for compaction by rollers. In wet tropical environments common in bauxite mining regions such as Guinea, Australia, and Brazil, maintaining road surfaces after heavy rains is a near-continuous task essential to operational continuity.

Modern graders are often equipped with GPS machine guidance systems that allow operators to achieve design grades and cross-falls automatically, improving accuracy and reducing the need for manual surveying checks. Graders are typically supported by water carts, rollers, and bulldozers as part of an integrated road maintenance fleet.
