Fuel Bay

A fuel bay is a purpose-built, secure, and engineered facility within a mining site where mobile plant and equipment — including haul trucks, excavators, front end loaders, graders, water trucks, light vehicles, and small plant items — are refueled during shift changes or when fuel levels fall below operational thresholds. Fuel bays are critical support infrastructure in all mining operations, including bauxite, gold, iron ore, and diamond mines, and are typically strategically located to minimize equipment travel time to and from the active working areas, thereby maximizing productive utilization.

A well-designed fuel bay comprises fuel dispensing pumps and meters (typically capable of delivering diesel at high flow rates of 500–1,000 liters per minute for large mining equipment), above-ground fuel storage tanks or underground tanks with secondary containment, a covered canopy structure to protect personnel and equipment from weather, a hardstand apron of reinforced concrete or compacted gravel with impermeable lining and bunded drainage to contain spills, fire suppression systems (foam-based or dry powder extinguishers), environmental spill kits, and a fuel management system for dispensing control and recording.

In remote mining operations, fuel bays are often connected to a bulk fuel storage facility (fuel farm) via underground or above-ground pipelines fitted with leak detection systems. Fuel dispensing records are critical for cost allocation to individual mining equipment units, enabling accurate calculation of fuel burn per hour, fuel cost per tonne moved, and compliance with internal maintenance schedules that tie service intervals to fuel consumption.

Fuel bay operations are governed by strict health, safety, and environmental (HSE) standards covering fire and explosion prevention (no ignition sources, anti-static earthing connections), personal protective equipment (PPE) requirements, hazardous material handling procedures, spill response protocols, and emergency shutdown procedures. Regular inspections and leak testing of tanks, pipework, and dispensing equipment are mandatory to protect the environment and comply with petroleum storage regulations.
