A Flora Survey in the context of mining is a systematic scientific investigation of the plant communities — including all species of trees, shrubs, grasses, herbs, mosses, lichens, and other vegetation — present within a defined study area that is proposed for or already subjected to mining activities. Flora surveys are a mandatory component of environmental impact assessments (EIAs) and mine closure planning for all categories of mining operations, including bauxite, gold, iron ore, and diamond mining, and are required under environmental legislation in most mining jurisdictions worldwide.
A comprehensive flora survey involves multiple field visits across different seasons to capture the full diversity of plant species present, as many species are only identifiable when flowering or fruiting. Trained botanists systematically traverse the survey area using a combination of transect surveys, quadrat sampling, and opportunistic searches, recording all plant species encountered, their abundance, distribution, condition, and conservation status (using national and international threat categories such as the IUCN Red List and national threatened species lists). Particular attention is paid to the identification of rare, threatened, or endemic species that may require additional protection measures or that could influence mine layout and project permitting.
In bauxite mining — particularly in biodiverse regions such as the jarrah forests of Western Australia or the Amazon basin — flora surveys are especially important because bauxite deposits often coincide with high-biodiversity ecosystems. The surveys inform the design of the vegetation clearing program, the identification of seed sources and topsoil stockpile locations for rehabilitation purposes, and the development of the progressive mine rehabilitation program, which must restore disturbed areas to a condition comparable to the pre-mining vegetation. Flora survey data also feeds into biodiversity offset calculations where the mine must demonstrate net positive biodiversity outcomes as a condition of its environmental approval. Post-mining monitoring programs track the recovery of vegetation in rehabilitated areas against flora survey baseline data to measure rehabilitation success.
