It is typically expressed in terms of tonnes moved per hour, tonnes per effective operating hour, or cubic meters per hour per machine, and is a critical metric for evaluating the operational efficiency and cost-effectiveness of mining fleets in bauxite, gold, iron ore, and diamond operations.
Fleet productivity is influenced by a complex interaction of factors spanning equipment characteristics, operational conditions, management effectiveness, and site-specific variables. Equipment factors include the rated payload capacity of haul trucks, the bucket capacity and swing cycle time of excavators and loaders, and the mechanical reliability of individual units as reflected in their availability and utilization rates. Operational factors include haul road conditions and grades, cycle time components such as loading time, travel time loaded and empty, dump time, and queue time, as well as ore variability that affects digging conditions and loading rates.
Management factors influencing fleet productivity include the quality of the dispatch system, operator skill and behavior, the effectiveness of the blasting program in producing well-fragmented ore, and the timeliness of maintenance activities that minimize equipment downtime. Fleet productivity benchmarking — comparing actual productivity against best-in-class operations or simulator-predicted outputs — is a core activity in mine performance improvement programs. In iron ore operations, for example, haul truck productivities of 250–400 bank cubic meters per hour are targeted depending on haul distance and truck size, while in diamond and gold mines, where ore handling volumes may be smaller, productivity metrics are often normalized to cost per tonne to account for differences in ore value. Improving fleet productivity by even a few percentage points can translate into significant reductions in cost per tonne and meaningful increases in mine profitability.
