Flash Tank

A Flash Tank, also referred to as a flash vessel or flash drum, is a pressure-reducing vessel used in mineral processing and hydrometallurgical operations to separate steam and gases from a hot liquid slurry or solution by rapidly reducing the pressure of the stream. The sudden reduction in pressure causes dissolved gases or steam to flash off, resulting in a liquid-vapor separation that is collected and used or managed accordingly. Flash tanks are a fundamental component in both the Bayer Process for alumina production from bauxite and in pressure oxidation (POX) circuits used in the treatment of refractory gold ores.

In the Bayer Process, high-temperature, high-pressure digestion liquor exits the autoclave digesters and must be cooled progressively before it can be processed in the precipitation stage. A series of flash tanks arranged in sequence — known as a flash train — reduces the temperature and pressure in stages, recovering steam that is then recycled back into the process as heat energy, improving overall energy efficiency. This heat integration is critical to the economics of alumina refinery operations, particularly given the large volumes of bauxite slurry processed.

In gold mining, flash tanks are used in pressure oxidation (POX) circuits where refractory sulfide concentrates are oxidized under high pressure and temperature in autoclaves. After oxidation, the slurry is discharged through a series of flash tanks to progressively lower the pressure and temperature before the oxidized material proceeds to cyanide leaching. Proper flash tank design and operation ensures stable operation of the autoclave circuit, minimizes thermal shock to downstream equipment, and maintains process efficiency and safety. Instrumentation on flash tanks typically includes pressure transmitters, temperature sensors, and level controllers to maintain optimal operating conditions.
