A fine ore bin is a large-capacity storage vessel or hopper in a mineral processing plant specifically designed to receive, store, and provide a controlled, metered feed of crushed and screened fine ore to the grinding mill circuit or other downstream processing equipment. The fine ore bin serves as a critical buffer in the processing flowsheet, decoupling the primary crushing and screening circuit from the grinding and beneficiation circuit to allow each section to operate independently at its optimum rate and to absorb short-term imbalances in feed availability.
In bauxite, gold, iron ore, and diamond mining operations, fine ore bins are typically located between the secondary or tertiary crushing circuit and the ball mill or SAG mill feed system. The bin is fed from above by conveyors carrying crushed ore at or below a specified top size, typically in the range of 10mm to 32mm depending on the mill design and ore type. The bin is discharged from the bottom using vibratory feeders, belt feeders, or apron feeders that deliver a precisely controlled tonnage to the mill feed conveyor.
The capacity of a fine ore bin is engineered to provide a specific number of hours of live storage — typically 8 to 24 hours of mill feed at design throughput — allowing the grinding circuit to continue operating through planned and unplanned outages in the crushing circuit, shift changes, and short-term variations in ore availability from the mine. Some designs incorporate surge capacity above the minimum live storage requirement to further enhance operational flexibility.
Structural design of fine ore bins must account for the static and dynamic loads imposed by the stored material, the potential for bridging or hang-ups of sticky or cohesive ore types, the need for safe access provisions for inspection and blockage clearing, and the wear protection of the bin walls and discharge cone against the abrasive action of the ore.
