An Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) is a formal, multi-disciplinary process used to identify, predict, evaluate, and communicate the potential environmental, social, and health impacts of a proposed mining project — encompassing bauxite, gold, iron ore, or diamond extraction and processing operations — on the biophysical and human environment, and to define measures to avoid, minimize, mitigate, or compensate for significant adverse effects. The EIA is typically required by national legislation as a prerequisite for obtaining environmental authorization to proceed with a mining project and is conducted prior to the commencement of construction or significant ground disturbance. The EIA process begins with scoping — identifying the key issues and stakeholders to be addressed — and proceeds through baseline data collection, impact prediction and significance assessment, evaluation of alternatives, mitigation planning, and the preparation of a formal Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) or Environmental Impact Report (EIR) that is submitted to the competent authority for review. Public participation and stakeholder engagement are integral components of a rigorous EIA process, ensuring that affected communities and civil society organizations have an opportunity to contribute information and express concerns. For large-scale mining projects with significant transboundary, biodiversity, or social impacts, the EIA must also satisfy international standards such as the IFC Performance Standards, the Equator Principles, and sector-specific guidelines developed by the International Council on Mining and Metals (ICMM).
