Given that mines are often located in remote or geographically challenging areas with limited access to national electricity grids and fuel distribution networks, energy supply is frequently a critical operational and strategic consideration. Energy supply systems for mining operations may include grid-connected electricity from national or regional utility providers; on-site diesel, gas, or heavy fuel oil power generation; renewable energy installations such as solar photovoltaic arrays, wind turbines, or hydroelectric systems; battery energy storage systems (BESS); and hybrid configurations that combine multiple supply sources for reliability and cost optimization. The reliability and cost of energy supply directly impact production continuity, operating costs, and competitiveness. In remote bauxite and iron ore operations in West Africa, Australia, or Brazil, for example, energy supply infrastructure may represent a major capital investment. Mining companies are increasingly investing in on-site renewable energy and off-grid power systems as a means of reducing dependence on diesel fuel, lowering energy costs, and meeting decarbonization commitments.
