In the context of bauxite, gold, iron ore, and diamond mining, emission monitoring systems are installed at key point sources such as processing plant stacks, conveyor transfer enclosures, ventilation exhausts, and vehicle wash-down areas, as well as at strategic ambient air quality monitoring stations positioned around the mine boundary.
Continuous emission monitoring systems (CEMS) provide real-time data streams that enable operations teams to detect emission exceedances immediately and respond before regulatory thresholds are breached. In underground gold mines, gas monitoring systems — a specialized form of emission monitoring — continuously measure methane, carbon monoxide, and oxygen levels to ensure worker safety. CEMS in iron ore pelletizing or sintering plants monitor SO2, NOx, and PM concentrations in stack gas with high accuracy. Data collected by the emission monitoring system is typically integrated with the mine's environmental data management platform, where it is validated, archived, and used to produce compliance reports.
