Dozing in mining is the operation of a bulldozer or dozer—a large, tracked earthmoving machine fitted with a front-mounted steel blade—to push, spread, level, and relocate materials such as soil, overburden, waste rock, ore, and reclamation fill across a mine site. It is one of the most fundamental and widely used earthmoving activities in surface mining operations including bauxite, gold, iron ore, and diamond mines. Dozers are used throughout the mining cycle for a range of tasks: clearing vegetation and topsoil during mine establishment, maintaining haul road surfaces by pushing loose material and filling potholes, pushing stockpiled ore or waste material to create or reshape piles, cleaning up around shovels and loaders to keep the working area free of spillage, reclaiming disturbed land by spreading topsoil and shaping final land forms, and supporting blast preparation by clearing drill pads and access routes. Dozer productivity is measured in terms of the volume of material moved per hour and is influenced by factors including blade size, engine power, ground conditions, dozing distance, and material characteristics. GPS-guided dozer technology has significantly improved precision and efficiency in applications such as haul road construction, tailings beach management, and landform rehabilitation in modern mining operations.
