Discharge Pipeline

A Discharge Pipeline in mining is a system of pipes used to transport slurry, tailings, water, or processed mineral products from a processing plant, pump station, or thickener to a designated destination such as a tailings storage facility (TSF), water treatment plant, or shipping terminal. Discharge pipelines are a critical component of the infrastructure in bauxite, gold, iron ore, and diamond mining operations, enabling the hydraulic transport of large volumes of material over considerable distances with minimal manual handling. The design of discharge pipelines must account for factors including slurry density, particle size distribution, flow velocity, pipe material selection, corrosion resistance, and pressure requirements to prevent blockages, pipe wear, and environmental leaks. In bauxite refining operations, discharge pipelines carry caustic slurry residue (red mud) to residue storage areas. In gold mining, cyanide-bearing tailings slurry is transported through discharge pipelines to tailings dams with strict containment and monitoring requirements. The integrity of discharge pipelines is closely monitored using pressure sensors, flow meters, and regular inspection programs to prevent environmental incidents and ensure operational continuity.
