The most common type of density meter used in modern mineral processing is the nuclear (gamma-ray) density gauge, which measures the attenuation of gamma radiation as it passes through a pipe or vessel containing a slurry. The degree of attenuation correlates with the density of the material, providing a continuous, non-contact measurement. Alternatively, Coriolis flow meters and vibrating element density meters offer highly accurate density measurement based on the mass flow and resonant frequency principles, respectively. In the Bayer Process used for bauxite refining, density meters monitor caustic soda solutions and red mud slurry streams to maintain the correct liquor-to-solid ratios.
