In gold mining, the decant pond that develops within a TSF contains process water potentially laden with residual cyanide, heavy metals, and other reagents, requiring careful water quality management and treatment before any discharge. Iron ore tailings ponds develop decant ponds consisting of water separated from fine iron ore slurries, which is typically recovered for reuse in the concentrator plant to minimize fresh water consumption and comply with water management plans. In diamond mining operations, particularly where kimberlite tailings are processed, decant ponds collect water that separates from the settled tailings, which is reclaimed and recirculated through the processing plant.
