Culvert

A culvert is a structural conduit, typically made of reinforced concrete, corrugated steel, high-density polyethylene (HDPE), or other durable materials, that is installed beneath roads, haul roads, tailings storage facilities, waste rock dumps, or other surface infrastructure to allow the controlled passage of water, stormwater, or process drainage across or under the structure. In bauxite, gold, iron ore, and diamond mining operations, culverts are essential infrastructure elements of mine site water management systems, playing a critical role in managing surface water runoff, preventing erosion, controlling sedimentation, and maintaining road integrity under heavy haul truck traffic. Culvert design must account for catchment hydrology, peak flow volumes, sediment loads, and the dynamic loads imposed by heavy mining vehicles. Undersized or poorly maintained culverts can lead to road washouts, flooding of active mining areas, environmental contamination from uncontrolled water or sediment discharge, and damage to downstream waterways. Culvert inspection, maintenance, and rehabilitation are important elements of mine infrastructure management plans, particularly in tropical environments with intense wet season rainfall, such as bauxite mining regions in Guinea, Jamaica, or the Kimberley region of Australia.
