Conveyor Maintenance

Conveyor maintenance encompasses the full range of scheduled and unscheduled activities performed to keep mining conveyor systems in safe, reliable, and efficient operating condition. In the mining industry — including bauxite, gold, iron ore, and diamond operations — conveyors are mission-critical assets that handle enormous volumes of material continuously, and their failure can result in significant production losses, safety incidents, and costly emergency repairs. Maintenance programmes are typically structured around three levels: preventive maintenance (scheduled servicing of components such as belt tensioning, bearing lubrication, roller replacement, and cleaner blade adjustment), predictive maintenance (condition-based monitoring using vibration analysis, thermography, and oil analysis to detect impending failures), and corrective maintenance (reactive repairs in response to unexpected breakdowns). In bauxite mining, maintenance must address the aggressive build-up of sticky material on rollers and return idlers. In gold mining, belt wear from abrasive ore and chemical exposure in heap leach environments are key concerns. In iron ore mining, the high tonnage and belt speeds require frequent monitoring of belt joints and drive components. In diamond mining, maintenance teams must ensure that conveyor systems do not cause unnecessary breakage of diamond-bearing material. Maintenance planning in mining often uses Computerised Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS) to schedule tasks, track work orders, manage spare parts inventory, and analyse asset reliability data to continuously improve maintenance efficiency.
