Condition Monitoring

Condition monitoring is a systematic engineering practice used in mining operations to continuously or periodically assess the physical state and performance of critical plant and equipment in order to detect early signs of deterioration, wear, or imminent failure before a breakdown occurs. In all forms of mining — including bauxite, gold, iron ore, and diamond extraction — condition monitoring is applied to components such as conveyor drives, crushers, mills, pumps, fans, and hoisting equipment. Common condition monitoring techniques include vibration analysis, thermography, oil analysis, ultrasonic testing, motor current signature analysis, and acoustic emission monitoring. Data collected from sensors and portable instruments is compared against baseline measurements and predefined alarm thresholds to identify trends indicating abnormal operation. Effective condition monitoring supports predictive maintenance strategies, which extend equipment life, reduce unplanned downtime, lower spare parts inventory costs, and improve overall plant availability. In remote mining locations where equipment replacement lead times are long, condition monitoring is especially valuable for avoiding costly production interruptions and safety hazards.
