Applicable across bauxite, gold, iron ore, and diamond mining operations, competency assessments are a cornerstone of occupational health and safety management systems and are legally mandated in most mining jurisdictions. They are conducted through a combination of written examinations, practical demonstrations, oral interviews, observation of work performance, and review of prior qualifications and experience. Competency assessments are aligned to standardized competency frameworks or unit standards — often developed by national mining qualifications authorities or industry bodies — that define the precise performance criteria and required evidence for each competency unit. In mining, assessments commonly cover areas such as explosives handling, mobile equipment operation, underground ventilation management, emergency response procedures, occupational health and hygiene, and environmental compliance.
