Acid Mine Drainage

The generation of acidic, metal-laden water resulting from the oxidation of sulfide minerals, particularly pyrite, when exposed to air and water during or after mining operations. Acid mine drainage (AMD) poses significant environmental risks in gold and iron ore mining where sulfide-bearing waste rock or tailings are present. AMD requires active management through water treatment, cover systems, and alkaline amendment to protect surrounding waterways.
